making friends as and adult is hard. you can’t really be like “hey, will you sit at my lunch table? will you hang out with me?” but that’s exactly what i wanted to say when i first met laura. i’d recently moved to florida and we were teaching summer school together. there was something about her that reminded me of my friends at home. and i so wanted to meet friends like my friends at home.
i learned she was from ohio. well that explained it. no wonder she was like my indiana friends!
slowly, as our paths crossed more often in the teaching world, we started to become friends. and then she moved to my neighborhood and we started going on walks.
after a long day of teaching, walking and talking with another adult was like therapy. our friendship grew as we shared our affinity for the midwest, snacks as meals, veronica mars, coffee, wine, the bachelor, comfy clothes, pretending we liked to go out, and so many other things.
laura’s friendship was such an answer to prayers. she introduced me to a whole new group of friends who would become my family away from my family. when we moved back to indianapolis, i was so sad to say goodbye. i knew i’d still see her on visits but i secretly hoped she might one day move back to ohio.
though she’s just two hours away, it’s still harder than it used to be to get together. i am so sure i’m not that busy until i try to make plans with laura. i miss our daily walks but always look forward to talking to her on the phone. laura is positive, she is encouraging, she trusts in God and His plan for her life. she is caring, selfless, funny, fun, friendly, welcoming, and a genuinely good person. her smile lights up the room. i am so so so so so so so so excited to celebrate her wedding this summer and also thrilled she is sharing today for…
