denise’s LITTLE things

practice daily gratitude· your LITTLE things

meet my mom, denise

this beautiful woman embodies the role of mom, in every sense of the word. she has played all the parts – caretaker, confidant, tear wiper, listener, supporter, encourager, argument solver, carpooler, voice of reason, voice i don’t want to hear, voice i need to hear, sympathisizer, counselor, fixer, friend. she has always been all the things. among so many other life achievements, she took on this role of mom with grace, like she’d done it a million times before.

in the midst of my own motherhood journey, i often think to myself, i don’t remember my mom struggling with this. was this hard for her? did she worry about this? what would she do?  she always seemed like she knew what she was doing and if she didn’t, she still has me fooled.

there are so many things i could say about my mom but these three stand out:

  • she leads by example
  • she encourages us to be ourselves.
  • she is strong in her convictions.

my mom never tells us to do anything she isn’t already doing. be kind. she is. trust God. she does. serve others. yep. be confident. done. put your family first. always. i can always look to her for example.

my mom let us be ourselves. she still encourages us to be confident and stick up for what we think is right. growing up, she listened to our opinions, helped guide our thinking, and encouraged us to be brave and use our God-given gifts for the good of others. all the while she made sure we knew the world did not revolve around us {i heard that one a lot!}. she never pushed us to be a certain way, she just encouraged us to be us.

my mom always puts God and her faith first. when we were younger, i watched her set aside time to pray everyday, to learn more about her faith so that she could live it. she modeled God’s unconditional love with our family. she was sure and steady in her beliefs. she didn’t cave to outside pressures when it came to parenting. she stuck to what she knew was right, no matter how much we begged or how many other parents were doing the opposite. she knew who she was and the kind of people she wanted us to be one day and she did not waver.

everyday, i strive to be the woman, wife, and mother my mom continues to be. i am honored that she is sharing today for
