do you believe in angels? i do. i have this vision of their huge, feathery wings invisibly wrapped around my children. not preventing all hurts and wrong, but wordlessly protecting them through their nights and their days, helping to soften whatever bad things come their way.
i am a bit of a worrier. i never thought i would be. neither of my parents were worriers so i am not sure where i came by this annoying habit. but there is one thing that helps. the thought of guardian angels. specifically their feathered wings, wrapped around whoever i am worried about.
i picture angel wings…
- when i kiss my kids goodnight
- when my husband gets on a plane
- as i watch E climb on the bus or K confidently walk into school
- when a friend is in labor
- when i am driving in the snow
- throughout pregnancies and miscarriages
- when i narrowly avoid a catastrophe
- as i pray for someone’s job interview
- when my kids try something new or someone faces a fear
- when someone is in the hospital
- when a loved one passes away
i could easily add to this list. my mom told me about guardian angels when i was little. as with many things, i trusted she was right. and until today, i never really looked for any proof. i just knew. this morning in my devotional i read this quote by St. Basil the Great ::
Beside each believer stands an angel as a protector and shepherd, leading him to life.
it was the first time i’d really read anything about angels. intrigued, i searched pinterest for more angel quotes and then searched biblegateway.com, my go-to online Bible resource. this is the verse i found.
and there it is. proof. God commands His angels to guard you wherever you go. if you aren’t in the habit of asking your guardian angel, and the angels of the ones you love, for help and protection, try it out today. you can use this simple prayer we pray at bedtime or make one up. either way, i think you’ll notice a certain lightness. one that resembles angels wings.
angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here, ever this day be at my side, to light, to guard, to rule, and to guide. amen.
